Sierra Leone ยท Before you travel
Visa & Entry
Most visitors to Sierra Leone need a visa, a passport with plenty of validity left, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate. The rules change more often than travel websites update, so this page tells you what to arrange, what to carry and, above all, who to ask. We deliberately publish no fees and no processing times.

Entry rules are set by the Government of Sierra Leone and change without notice. Visa categories, online systems, fees, whether visas on arrival are available and to whom, and health requirements have all changed in recent years.
This page is a checklist, not an authority. The only reliable sources are the Sierra Leonean embassy, high commission or consulate responsible for your country, the official government immigration channel, and your own government's travel advice.
Check twice: once when you book, and again a fortnight before you fly. That second check is the one that catches changes.
Who needs a visa
Most visitors do, including citizens of Germany, the United Kingdom, the rest of the EU, the United States, Canada and Australia.
Citizens of ECOWAS member states, the West African regional bloc, travel within the region under different arrangements and generally do not need a visa for Sierra Leone, subject to identity and residence documentation.
A small number of other nationalities have bilateral arrangements. If you hold two passports, check both: one may make the trip considerably easier.
Visa types normally distinguish tourism, business, transit and longer stays, single and multiple entry. Apply for the one that matches what you will actually do. Entering as a tourist and then working, including unpaid volunteering or filming, is a problem you do not want at the airport.
Journalists, photographers and film crews should assume that professional filming or reporting needs separate permission arranged in advance, whatever your visa says. Ask the embassy explicitly.
How to apply
There are broadly three routes, and which of them is currently available is exactly what you need to confirm.
1. Through the embassy, high commission or consulate responsible for your country. The traditional route: an application form, photographs, your passport, supporting documents and a fee, by post or in person.
2. Online, through the official government system. Sierra Leone has operated electronic visa and entry-approval systems. Use only the official government channel, confirmed by the embassy, never a search-engine result: there are many commercial lookalike sites that charge large mark-ups for filling in a form.
3. On arrival, which has been possible for some travellers at some periods, usually with prior approval obtained before departure. Never travel assuming this unless the embassy has confirmed it applies to you in writing. Airlines can and do refuse boarding to passengers without documented entry permission.
Supporting documents commonly requested: a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation or an invitation, recent passport photographs, and sometimes proof of funds or a yellow fever certificate.
Apply early. Postal applications mean your passport is away for a while, and embassies close for both Sierra Leonean and local public holidays.
Your passport
Validity. Six months beyond your intended departure is the usual standard in the region, and some carriers and officials apply it strictly. If your passport expires within a year of travel, renew it rather than gambling.
Blank pages. Have at least two facing blank pages for visas and stamps.
Condition matters. A damaged passport, water-stained or with a loose cover, causes problems at borders across the region.
Names must match. The name on your ticket, your visa and your passport should be identical. Mismatches are a common and entirely avoidable source of trouble.
Health documents
Yellow fever. A valid international certificate of vaccination is required for entry to Sierra Leone, and it may be checked on arrival. The certificate normally becomes valid ten days after vaccination, so do not leave it until the last week.
Carry the original card, the yellow booklet, with your passport. A photo on your phone is not a substitute, though having one as a backup is sensible.
If you cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, obtain a properly worded exemption letter from your doctor and check in advance with the embassy whether it will be accepted.
Other health requirements can appear at short notice, as they did during Ebola and during the pandemic. This is one of the things to re-check shortly before flying.
See our health and safety page for vaccinations to discuss with your doctor beyond the mandatory one.
What to carry, on paper
- Passport with the visa or entry approval in it or printed out.
- Yellow fever certificate, the original.
- Printed confirmation of your visa approval, your flights and your first night's accommodation.
- Your airport transfer booking, with a name and phone number: see the Lungi crossing page.
- Travel insurance details, including the emergency number and policy number.
- Passport photographs, a couple of spares.
- Copies of everything, kept separately from the originals, plus photographs stored somewhere you can reach without your phone.
Paper matters here. Phones run out of battery, networks fail, and officials ask for documents at moments when neither is working.
At the airport
Immigration and customs are at Lungi, before you cross the water to Freetown.
Have your documents in your hand, not in a case in the hold: passport, visa, yellow fever card, accommodation confirmation.
Expect questions about where you are staying and how long. Answer plainly. Having a printed booking makes this a thirty-second conversation.
Keep any entry slip or card you are given; you may need it on departure.
Customs. Standard rules on currency declaration and restricted goods apply. Do not attempt to leave with diamonds, gemstones, cultural objects, antiquities or anything made from wildlife, and do not accept a parcel from anybody to carry. Penalties are serious and the excuse is never believed.
If something is wrong with your paperwork, stay calm and polite, ask to speak to a supervisor, and contact your embassy if it escalates. Do not offer money.
The questions to ask the embassy
Send one email with these, and you will have everything this page cannot give you.
- Which visa type do I need for my purpose and length of stay?
- Is the application made online or on paper, and what is the official website address?
- What is the current fee and how is it paid?
- How long is processing taking at the moment?
- Which supporting documents are required for my nationality?
- How long is the visa valid, and from what date does it run?
- Is visa on arrival available to me, and if so what prior approval is needed?
- Are there any current health or entry requirements beyond yellow fever?
- Do I need separate permission for photography, filming or research?
Keep the reply. A written answer from the embassy is worth more than any webpage if a question arises at check-in.
Where to apply from Europe
Germany: Sierra Leone maintains an embassy in Berlin, in Herwarthstraรe in Lichterfelde, with consular hours on weekday mornings. There are also honorary consuls in Germany, including in Essen, Hamburg and the Munich area, who can often answer questions quickly.
United Kingdom: the Sierra Leone High Commission in London.
Elsewhere in Europe: Sierra Leone is represented in several capitals, and countries without a mission are covered from a neighbouring one. Ask which mission is responsible for your country of residence rather than your nationality, as these can differ.
Contact details, addresses and opening hours change. Confirm before travelling to a consulate in person, and telephone rather than relying on email alone, which is frequently unanswered at small missions.
The honest part
This is the step at which people give up on Sierra Leone. Not the flights, not the malaria tablets, not the roads. The visa, because the information online is contradictory, half of it is out of date, and a dozen commercial sites are competing to charge you for something that is straightforward when done properly.
It is not actually difficult. One email to the right mission, the documents they ask for, applied for in good time, and it is done. The difficulty is entirely informational.
Which is also an argument the country should hear. Countries that want visitors make entry legible: one official website, clear fees, published processing times, and a visa on arrival that actually works. Sierra Leone has extraordinary things to show people, and the first hurdle it puts in front of them is confusion about paperwork.
If you have applied recently, tell us what the process was, and we will publish it here with a date. That is more useful to the next traveller than anything else on this page.

This page is general guidance and not an authority on immigration matters.
Entry requirements for Sierra Leone are set by the Government of Sierra Leone and change
without notice; visa categories, online systems, fees, processing times and the availability
of visas on arrival have all changed in recent years. No fees, processing times or
website addresses are published here deliberately. Verify everything with the Sierra
Leonean embassy, high commission or consulate responsible for your country of residence, with
the official government immigration channel confirmed by that mission, and with your own
government's current travel advice, both when booking and again shortly before departure. A
yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry and is normally valid from ten days
after vaccination. Passport validity requirements are applied by airlines as well as by
immigration. Nothing here is legal or medical advice. Corrections and recent first-hand
experience of the application process are welcome through the
contact form and will be published with a date.
